Summer Library Reading Program

Kick Off the Summer Reading Program at the Summer Library Festival

The Buncombe County Public Library System wants to encourage continued literacy for youth throughout their summer vacation with the Summer Reading Program. Every year, the library kicks off the festivities with a party – and this year the sky is the limit. Literally.

Moonwalk over to the Summer Library Festival on Saturday, June 1 at the South Asheville/Oakley Branch Library, located at 749 Fairview Road. Launch time is from 10 a.m.-noon. You won’t have to worry about the atmosphere, because it is going to be a lot of fun. Parking is free, so no need to stress about parking meteors. Some activities include:

  • Space dance party featuring the Skrillbillies
  • Space-themed games and activities including planet ball, asteroid toss, chalk art, and giant bubbles
  • Inflatable planetarium
  • Storytimes
  • Photo booth
  • NCDOT Motorgrader
  • Craft making station

Summer Reading Program

The theme for the 2019 Summer Reading Program is “A Universe of Stories,” celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. After the opening party at the Oakley/South Asheville Library, fun space-themed events will take place at all the branch libraries throughout the entire summer. Here are a few highlighted events taking place throughout the Summer Reading Program (they may not all be space-themed, but you’re welcome to dress up like an alien to anything you like):

  • Astronaut costumes and unicorn week
  • Mindful Mondays to help you pause and find peace this summer
  • Lunar-ticks presented by the Asheville Museum of Science
  • Family Tai Chi
  • Ramen with a Side of College – This is a program for students starting college this fall
  • Romeo & Juliet in the Park @ Swannanoa
  • Get Your Art On!: printmaking
  • ecoEXPLORE: Intro to Herpetology

Participants of these events will receive a stamp for their Summer Reading bookmark. Each branch will have its own bookmark featuring all of the fun programs taking place at that library location throughout the summer. Find a bookmark at your local branch library after June 1. For every four stamps that a child gets, they may choose a free book from a special selection of prize books chosen by the Youth Services librarians. You can even pick up a book on anti-gravity – they’re impossible to put down.

So, keep reading, and keep visiting the library. Keep track of all the great programs taking place at each branch library throughout the year by checking out their calendar at buncombecounty.org/library.
